On this page
In short
- Add Wattle Bot from the Add to Discord page, then move its role above the roles it should manage.
- Set up modules in the dashboard, or run /setup in Discord for a checklist.
- Most problems come down to role order or channel permissions. See Troubleshooting.
1.Add Wattle Bot to your server
You need the Manage Server permission in the server you're adding it to.
- Open the Add to Discord page and choose Add to a server.
- Discord asks which server, and shows the permissions Wattle Bot wants. Each one is explained on our page.
- Choose Authorise. Wattle Bot joins straight away and its slash commands appear.
Prefer Wattle Bot's personal commands, like /remind, wherever you are? Choose Add to my apps instead. That adds it to your account, not a server.
2.Move its role up
Discord only lets a bot manage roles that sit below its own highest role, and only moderate members whose highest role is below it.
- Open Server Settings, then Roles.
- Drag the Wattle Bot role above every role you want it to give, take or moderate: role menu roles, level rewards, join roles and the roles of members it may time out or ban.
- Keep your admin roles above Wattle Bot. It doesn't need to sit at the very top.
3.Set it up
Open the dashboard, sign in with Discord and pick your server. Each module has its own page with an on and off switch, its settings, and a preview of any messages it sends. Save your changes before you leave a page.
Prefer to stay in Discord? Run /setup for a checklist of what's on and what still needs a channel or a role.
A good place to start
- Logging: pick a private channel for logs, so your team can see what happened.
- Auto-mod: turn on the invite link and spam filters, and exempt your staff roles.
- Welcome: choose a welcome channel and write a message in your own words.
- Role menus: build a menu for your optional roles and post it in a roles channel.
4.Using slash commands
Type / in any channel to see Wattle Bot's commands. Pick one and Discord shows its options; required options come first.
Commands that need a permission, like /ban, only show for members who have that permission. Server owners can change who sees which command in Server Settings, then Integrations, then Wattle Bot.
Some replies are only visible to you. They say “Only you can see this” underneath.
The commands page lists every command with its options and examples.
5.Tips for each module
Moderation
Set your moderator roles in the dashboard, and choose a channel for the moderation log. Every action gets a case number, so you can look it up later with /case.
Auto-mod
Start with each filter set to delete the message, then step up to a warning or a timeout once you're happy it catches the right things. Add your staff roles to the exempt list.
Levels
Set level rewards in the dashboard, and choose whether members keep earlier rewards. Turn XP off in channels like counting games or bot commands.
Role menus
Role menus need Wattle Bot's role to be above every role in the menu. After changing a menu in the dashboard, post it again so the buttons update.
Music and text to speech
Both need Wattle Bot to be able to see, connect to and speak in your voice channel. Join the voice channel first, then use /play or /tts join.
6.Troubleshooting
Wattle Bot doesn't respond
- Check it's online: it shows in the member list. If it's offline for everyone, check the status page.
- Check it can see the channel and send messages there. Channel permissions can override server permissions.
Slash commands don't show up
- Wattle Bot was probably added without permission to create commands. Add it again from the Add to Discord page. You won't lose your settings.
- Check Server Settings, then Integrations, then Wattle Bot, in case commands are turned off for some roles or channels.
- Restart Discord, or press Ctrl+R (Cmd+R on a Mac) to reload it.
It can't give a role, or can't moderate someone
Its role is below the role it's trying to manage, or below the member's highest role. See Move its role up. Nobody can moderate the server owner.
Permission errors
Each feature needs certain permissions. The Add to Discord page lists them all and which features use each one. If you unticked one when adding Wattle Bot, add it to the Wattle Bot role in Server Settings.
Music or text to speech won't join
Check that Wattle Bot can view, connect to and speak in the voice channel, and that the channel isn't full.
Still stuck?
Ask us in our Discord server, linked from the support page, with your server ID and what you tried.
7.Removing Wattle Bot
Right-click Wattle Bot in the member list and choose Kick, or remove it in Server Settings, then Integrations. What happens to your server's data afterwards is explained in the Privacy Policy.
To remove it from your account, open User Settings, then Authorised Apps, and choose Deauthorise next to Wattle Bot.
